SUSAN DODD
Susan Carol Barthold Dodd passed into eternal life on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, with her family around her bedside—just as she wanted—in her own home that she loved. Susan was born on Feb. 18, 1940, and was raised in Krum, where she attended school in the same class as her husband, Denney Dodd, who passed away a year before her. She and Denney eloped on April 19, 1958, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Both Susan's and Denney’s families had lived in Krum their entire lives and all attended Krum United Methodist Church. Susan was a descendant of the Barthold family, among Krum's earliest settlers.
Susan began working at Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Krum, which was started by her grandfather and one of her uncles, and she eventually retired from there before it became the Krum Heritage Museum. For almost 20 years, Susan worked at Moore Business Forms in Denton before the business relocated out of state. She and Denney had three sons whom they raised in the Methodist church in Krum, where she sang in the choir alongside her father and mother-in-law while her mother played the piano. Susan was an avid gardener, an excellent cook, and a wonderful seamstress. She made beautiful quilts for each of her five grandchildren and kept her granddaughter, Kelly, in the cutest clothes and adorable Halloween costumes year after year. Susan loved to travel; she and Denney loved taking trips with their travel buddies: John and Judy Holley, Marvin and Peggy Morgan, and Hugh and Sandy Pruett. During the last year of her life, she took two riverboat cruises down the Columbia and Mississippi rivers, a train ride through the Canadian Rockies, and a fall color road trip during the first week of October from Camden, Maine, to New York City, where she enjoyed the sights and visited the 9/11 Memorial. She loved it!
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Marjorie Barthold; her sister, Mayme Kathleen (1937–1939); her brother, Rodney Barthold, and his wife, Nina; and their son, Rod “Buddy” Barthold; her brothers-in-law, Fermin Trevino and Dan Dodd; as well as her husband of 67 years, Denney Dodd. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Russ Dodd and his wife, Karla, of San Antonio; Kenneth and his wife, Kay, of Krum; and Ron Dodd of Brooklyn, New York. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Staff Sergeant Sean Dodd, U.S. Army, stationed in South Korea; Kelly Foster and her husband, Blaze, of Raleigh, North Carolina; Klay Dodd and his wife, Chloe, of Corinth; Katy Bone and her husband, Cody, of Columbia, South Carolina; and Kooper Dodd and his wife, Chainey, of Krum. Nana, as she was known to all her grandchildren, had seven great-grandchildren, with her eighth born five days after her passing: Asher, Lectie, and Skylar Dodd; Correy, Daivy, and Teddy Bone; and Emery and newborn Nora Dodd. Susan is also survived by her sister, Jane Trevino; her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Dodd, Dorothy Dodd, and Robbyn Dodd; her former sisters-in-law, Jan Hall and Wanda Dodd; her brother-in-law, Don Dodd; her nieces, Kathy, Linda, Angela, and Donna; her nephews, Derek, Donovan, and Darren, and their families; and her close family friend of decades, Nancy Stevens. She is also survived by special family friends Lance and Nardeen Boxell, Nash, and Finley. Her son Ron's mini-dachshund, Henry, was also her beloved companion and lived with her during the last eight months of her life.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Concho Hearts Hospice and her three amazing nurses, Genevieve, Kristen, and Michelle, for the love and care they provided to Susan and her family.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Blue Mound United Methodist Church, 8421 N. I-35, in Denton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blue Mound United Methodist Church or the Krum Heritage Museum, both of which were close to Susan’s heart.
